First off, I'd like to go ahead an make it clear that I am not some right wing conservative. I claim neither the Democratic party nor the Republican party as my political representative. Keep that in mind when you read this rant, since it is in line with the typical conservative way of thinking. With that out of the way, I think I can go ahead and start talking about why increased gun control is a really, really bad idea.
Gun control is stupid. It doesn't do a single damn thing. It is a placebo. Plain and simple. You won't be safer; in all actuality, in the real world you will be facing more danger, since there is even less of a chance to defend yourself against criminals if guns are out and out banned. Think of it from a criminal's point of view: are you going to rob someone that has a gun or someone that doesn't have a gun? Duh. Unless you are a complete dumbass, you are going to go after the unarmed person (if you go after the armed person, I hope they blow you away; you are nothing more than wasted genetic code, and even the spot on the sidewalk that would represent you would be a waste of space).
Alright, lets say that a law were passed that forced people to register their guns. First off, I'm going to put this point out there, although it seems a bit far fetched that this would happen: If the government ever wanted to disarm the public, they could just go around and pick up the guns. Suck city. Second of all, a registering of firearms won't work. What kind of criminal will voluntarily register their gun? "Uh, yeah, my name is Mr. Dumbass, I rob people for a living. I'd like to register my gun..." Uh uh, won't happen.
Lets use our imaginations once again, boys and girls. Lets imagine that the US outlaws guns altogether (except for military and police uses, of course). Yup, that would be good... criminals would have weapons, and would have no reason whatsoever to fear the public in general. Wait, what is that you say? Guns are illegal, so criminals wouldn't have them? Oh yeah, I forgot to mention a little thing called the "black market". You see, sometimes, illegal items aren't completely incaccessable, if you know the right people. Have you ever heard of marijuana? Yes? Good, that will make my next point just a bit easier to get across. Marijuana is currently illegal substance, but yet, people still have access to it. Why is that? Well, first off, because it can be grown easily, but second of all, because there is a market out there that doesn't rely on the laws of the state. Guns no longer legal? No problem, now there can be a greater profit made on them.
I think it would be kinda cool if we were to go back to an Old West mentality about guns; everyone has them, so there is no reason to fear for your life as long as you are in good company. If someone is threatening your life, you can threaten theirs back, which (might) create a good checks-and-balances effect. If this were to occur, than the people would police themselves, and might possibly cut down on crimes (after all, if someone is going to rob a bank, there is the chance of being shot by 3 or 4 tellers, not to mention the bank patrons). Yeah, that would be good. :)
Well, I think I've said everything I can say on the subject. I hope that I've changed your mind; if I haven't, and you feel very strongly, you are welcome to submit your own rant as to why there should be more gun control.
