Movie Review: America's Sweethearts

A marginal movie. Nothing about this movie was really special, to set it apart from the hundreds of other romantic comedies out there. This was a very formulaic flick.

Here is the setup: Gwen and Eddie (Catherine Zeta-Jones and John Cusack) are Hollywood's most popular couple. Gwen dumps Eddie for Hector (Hank Azaria). Eddie runs a motorcycle through the window of a restuarant that Hector and Gwen are at. Eddie goes off to "relax" for several months, while Gwen makes a couple of flops without Eddie.

Bleh, I don't feel like writing out the rest of the plot. Quite frankly, it isn't worth it. There are some rather stupid points in the movie. The one that gets me the most is the name of Gwen's sister/personal assitant (played by Julia Roberts): Kiki. Thats right. Kiki. No, its not her nickname, its her real name. Something you'd name a parakeet that you don't want. Kiki is the love interest in the movie. Of all the female names that they could have chosen (Cara being an especially beautiful one), they had to pick "Kiki?" That isn't even a name that comes to mind when I think of female names! Hell, thats not even a name that comes to mind when I think of neuter names!

Another thing: in the movie, the talk about Gwen having made a couple of bombs, but as far as I can tell, they had been broken up for less than a year. No movie comes out in that short amount of time, much less two coming out in that same time.

Also, the main event in the movie is Gwen and Eddie's newest movie coming out, but the whacked-out director (Christopher Walken, woohoo!) won't let anyone see it.

Bleh, once again, I don't feel like talking about the plot, or lack thereof.

In case you haven't gotten the idea, this isn't that hot of a movie. The best part of the movie is the last half hour or so, where Christopher Walken's character shows the heavily-modified version of his movie to the press. That part is funny, and half of the reason that the movie gets as high of a rating as it gets. The other half is due to Christopher Walken's acting. He just kicks ass, period. 'nuff said.

All in all, wait until it comes out on HBO to see it. If you don't have HBO, wait until it comes to Showtime. If you don't have Showtime, wait until it comes to network TV. If you don't have a TV, don't worry about it.
