Although the Protoss are loathe to sacrifice valuable Templar, those that do achieve this final level of level of commitment are honored in the annals of the Templar Archives.

Archons are powerful units, yes, but as with so many other SC units, if they are left alone, they are going to die quickly. It is best to support a Zealot or Dragoon squad with a couple of Archons; they can do some devestating damage to enemy units. Other than that, there really isn't another reason to have them.
